Take a journey into a remote part of the Kenai Fjords National Park on a glacier discovery trek! This is a great trip for those seeking an exploration style adventure in the backcountry, far away from roads, busy campgrounds, and trampled trails.
Our trip begins along a glacial fed river in the Kenai Fjords National Park. As you hike further up the river you are rewarded with your first glacier discovery. You will get to touch the glacier, and hike on the glacier! This is #1 out of a possible 6 glaciers we may see close up. This glacier is the source of the river you will follow all the way out to where it meets the sea in an awe inspiring fjord surrounded by towering mountains.
The journey ventures 30+ miles through alpine tundra, canyons, and glacial moraine deep in the backcountry. We carry our backpacks several miles each day, then drop the packs for side trips to explore canyons, alpine lakes, glaciers, photograph wildlife, see your guide’s favorite secret spots, and make your own discoveries. This allows you to find your right balance of challenge, rest, and free time. Your guide will keep you safe and comfortable, serve you wonderful meals, and help you to understand and appreciate the landscape and wildlife around you.

TRIP DETAILS & ITINERARY
**There is a pre-trip meeting the afternoon prior to departure in Kenai, AK. You will be given the meeting location info upon booking your reservation. The pre-trip meeting is a meet-and-greet, orientation, safety-brief, and Q&A session all rolled into one. Following this we’ll have a group dinner featuring local craft brews, wine, and gourmet pizza! Dinner and beverages included.
Our trip begins in Kenai, AK at 8:00am. We’ll board the float plane and take off from a floatplane lake into the skies for a spectacular flight into Kenai Fjords National Park. We’ll set off on our first leg hiking along a glacial creek until reaching the first glacier camp. We’ll make camp and take in the magical wilderness that surrounds us. A gourmet backcountry dinner will be served, and we’ll spend the evening exploring the glacier, and hiking around. Lunch & dinner included.
After a warm, delicious breakfast, we’ll break camp and begin our trek through a mountain pass. This is a great hike, but at times we may have to do some bushwhacking, zig-zagging, and river fording. There are great opportunities for pictures on this route as the terrain slowly changes from river vegetation to alpine tundra giving way to views of rarely seen hanging glaciers. We’ll take our time reaching our second glacier camp, this is pure Alaska! All meals included.
We’ll follow the river to it’s final outlet into the ocean. This is where the glacial river meets the sea! The views from within this river valley are stunning, and there are really cool side canyons with glaciers and creeks to explore along the way. We’ll make camp on a sandy beach within the fjord, a location for superb photography opportunities and great beach camping. All meals included.
Exploration day! We’ll take a group vote on where we want to go but a few of the options are to explore a canyon with a possible ascent above a massive ice field, or a non-technical ascent of a mountain peak that towers above the fjords offering panoramic vistas that words cannot describe. After a great day of exploring we’ll head back to camp and dig into yet another gourmet backcountry dinner. All meals included.
Departure back to the front country, but we won’t be leaving the area until the afternoon (weather & tides permitting). This is a great opportunity for some last minute exploration and photography. Our float plane will pick us up on the shore near our camp and fly us back to Kenai for an amazing flight opening up vistas to dozens of glaciers and mountains. We plan to arrive back in Homer around 4pm. Due to variable and unpredictable weather conditions that can occur in this part of Alaska, we highly recommend making your travel arrangements after the trip for at least 1 day following the scheduled trip end date. Breakfast & lunch included.
